Rights, Justice & Dignity on International Migrants Day
Today, on December 18, International Migrants Day, we are joining with migrants, rights advocates and allies in support of human rights, justice and dignity for all migrants. This year, we encourage you to lift your voices to call for human rights at all international borders, and for an end to the detention and deportation of migrants.
Even
while millions of undocumented immigrants in this country will find a
temporary relief from deportation in the coming months, we are reminded
every day of those migrants here and around the world -- more than 232
million people -- who face hardship and trauma, abuse, discrimination,
detention, family separation, deportation, and dangerous journeys. There is much to do to uphold human rights, end repressive migration policies, and save lives.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, in his message for this year's International Migrants Day, noted, "Far
too many migrants live and work in precarious and unjust conditions.
Many risk their lives at sea, attempting to seek sanctuary. They and
their children are extremely vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Many
are deprived of their liberty, rather than met with empathy and
necessary protection. Persistent discrimination against migrants
generates sharp inequalities, threatens the social fabric, and all too
often, leads to violent and deadly attacks."
